May update

Dear Family and Friends, Very warm greetings to you from West Africa! We are in the midst of hot season, but looking forward to things hopefully getting a bit more manageable temperature-wise before too much longer. I continue on with full-time language studies and have also been working towards getting my new house ready. After last update’s discussion on local language learning, someone asked me the very good question of why folks who move here as IWs need to learn two new languages instead of just one. Others might have different philosophies on this, but my answer in a nutshell […]

a call to prayer

A call to prayer… “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power. Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” -Ephesians 6:10-12 We are well aware that the enemy is fighting against the advance of the kingdom in West Africa, and that he wants to keep people in darkness and held in slavery […]

March Update

Dear Family and Friends, Thank you for your prayers over these past several weeks as I’ve been adjusting to life here and starting full-time study of the local language. There have been many ups, downs, and lots of days of in-betweens. As some of you are already aware, our team experienced an unexpected and unsettling security-related incident in our area last month which necessitated some further consideration and adjustments on our part. We are trying to carry on with our normal activities as much as possible and continue to monitor the situation. We are thankful that He sees and understands […]

Financial update

Hi everyone, Some of you have inquired recently regarding my financial support and how you can best help with that. My monthly support comes from the Great Commission Fund, the CMA’s collective fund for supporting the basic needs, language study, airfare, etc. of many of their international workers. These funds are collected through your local CMA churches and online at https://secure.cmalliance.org/give/ under the “Give to the Great Commission Fund” box. I also have three individual accounts that help with other expenses I incur besides those already mentioned. All three of these can be accessed via this same link to the […]

Giving Thanks

Dear family and friends, A belated Happy Thanksgiving to you from France! I hope you all had a wonderful holiday. We Americans here at the language school had our own celebration over lunch last Thursday in the midst of a “business-as-usual” day for France. It was a great chance to celebrate together, eat a yummy “traditional” Thanksgiving meal, and also reflect on the many things for which we have to be thankful to God, even in the midst of a difficult year of transition, language learning, time away from family, adjustment to a different culture, etc. I’m most thankful that […]

August update

Hello family and friends, Summer has been going by quickly- French courses, vacation, and now getting geared up to begin fall term! The July session at Albertville was a fun way to review some of the French I’ve learned and to gain additional speaking practice. I was also thankful for the chance to meet some new people who arrived especially for the summer course, and to continue to get to know other new friends and neighbors here. After this course finished, one of my sisters and I had some fun times travelling together in Spain, Italy, and Ireland. It was […]

June Update

Hello family and friends, I’m very thankful to report that I passed my second trimester of French language studies at the university in Chambery and have just moved to Albertville! My days now are filled with settling in, getting to know the other people in the program here, studying French, etc. etc. I am now living on-campus of my next French language study program, which I will begin soon. It’s a big change to go from living in an apartment with one other person to living in dorm-style housing with about a dozen other single girls at any given time, […]

Update

Hello family and friends, Happy Spring! While I’m still wearing a coat most days here in Chambery, it is encouraging that things are warming up at least a little bit, and also that there are beautiful flowers in bloom now.   What’s been happening: Further French studies occupy a lot of my time, as I am in the midst of my second trimester. I’m really thankful that I passed my courses last term, and that things have been overall not as difficult this term. However, I still have a long way to go, and I especially need to develop more […]
